Changsha, Hunan – A central city in China's middle reaches of the Yangtze River, where advanced manufacturing forms the backbone of its modern industrial system. In 2022, the Changsha construction machinery cluster successfully earned its place among China's national advanced manufacturing clusters. Recently, at this engineering machinery equipment manufacturer in Changsha, over fifty concrete pump trucks were ready for delivery. Concrete pump trucks are the company's flagship product, and their production workshops operate with busy efficiency.

Pump trucks are indispensable heavy equipment for construction. Their articulated booms precisely transport and pour concrete to designated locations. On this company's intelligent production line, a pump truck rolls off the line every 45 minutes.
A single pump truck like this comprises nearly 6,600 parts sourced from over 600 suppliers. Despite the complex processes and high integration, the factory achieves an annual peak output of nearly 7,000 units. This high capacity and efficiency rely heavily on the comprehensive support provided by the industrial cluster.

From simple steel structures and painting to complex components like hydraulic parts and electronic controls – everything is readily available. For one pump truck, 85% of its parts can be sourced locally around Changsha."
However, just a few years ago, the company faced significant supply chain disruption risks. The boom is one of the most critical structural components of a pump truck, and its precise movement relies on a key part: the multi-way valve. Previously, the multi-way valves needed for production were largely imported, leading to high costs, slow delivery, and difficult after-sales support, severely constraining the development of many pump truck manufacturers.

Zhang Xipeng, Engineer, SANY Pump & Road Machinery Division: "Back when it was slow, because the ordering cycle from overseas was so long, we had to forecast production volumes half a year in advance. Each shipment arriving was limited to just dozens of units, which simply couldn't keep pace with our market demand."
To help enterprises solve supply chain challenges and promote the cluster development of the engineering machinery industry, the Changsha municipal government specifically established an Industrial Chain Promotion Office. It implemented actions to "strengthen, supplement, and extend" the industrial chain. The local parts sourcing rate has risen from 16.3% in 2019 to over 30% today.
Currently, the Changsha engineering machinery cluster continues to solidify its foundations and enhance the resilience of its industrial chain. Located just 13 kilometers from this pump truck manufacturer, a hydraulic component manufacturer from Shanghai commenced operations last year.

The establishment of this hydraulic component manufacturer in Changsha not only brings convenience to local engineering machinery manufacturers but has also delivered significant cost benefits for the company itself. Savings on transportation and warehousing costs alone account for 5% of its total sales revenue.
On this day, Ma Fei, a technician from the pump truck manufacturer, drove less than 20 minutes to reach the workshop of this hydraulic parts supplier. Here, a batch of newly produced multi-way valves was being loaded onto hydraulic valve pressure testing machines. These valves were co-developed and customized by the host manufacturer and the supplier specifically for a new pump truck model. Through this close collaboration, both parties have not only shortened the R&D cycle but also improved product compatibility and reliability.

Relocating to Changsha, Hunan has provided immense convenience for us as the host manufacturer. Communication and efficiency between both sides have significantly improved. We are also much better aligned on key points of mutual focus."
